Hamilton’s CBD – Hamilton Central

Discussion Paper one

“If you don’t measure it, it’s hard to manage it.”
There has been, and is still, work being done to turn around Hamilton Central from the negative effect of The Base. However, there is no way of recording Hamilton Central’s health. Is it improving year on year or going backwards?  What effect did the Chiefs’ win, or the ice skating-rink installed in Garden Place, have on the city’s retail? If Hamilton Central conducted a marketing campaign how would its success be measured?  These types of questions need to be answered so that we know what works and what doesn’t. Then the positives can be built on and the negatives discarded. A healthy CBD has a healthy day-time retail industry. The health of the retail industry can be measured in foot traffic. You cannot have one without the other. The proposal is to install pedestrian counters at five key locations in the CBD shopping precinct.

The information gathered would be available for:
·         Hamilton Central Business Association when monitoring the success of marketing campaigns
·         Retail businesses when planning marketing campaigns
·         Valuers when valueing commercial buildings and rent values
·         Landlords when setting rents
·         Tenants when selecting a shop and evaluating the rental cost
·         Hamilton City Council when doing city planning and to monitor the “health” of the city centre.
